As we start to get older, we might notice that our hands start to lose volume and the skin become loose and sagging. Skin quality can be reduced and elasticity compromised, especially for those who expose their skin to the sun or extreme elements. At Rosie Cooper Aesthetics in Leamington Spa, we offer a non-invasive treatment for the hands which can revitalise the skin, add volume and improve overall skin quality. This treatment uses injectable dermal fillers.
Good quality dermal fillers are made of the very same substance naturally present in young and healthy skin. This substance is called hyaluronic acid (HA) and is a cushioning and hydrating ‘sugar’. At Rosie Cooper Aesthetics, we only use the highest quality dermal filler products with a proven track record for safe use in the hands. When injected into the back of the hands with a very fine needle, the HA filler gel creates and replaces lost volume, thus lifting and smoothing lines on the surface. HA attracts and holds up to 1000 times its own weight in water, so as time goes on, you will notice that your skin becomes more plump, hydrated and resilient.
If you are someone who is noticing the signs of ageing in your hands, you will most-likely benefit from a dermal filler treatment for this area. Many of our patients who decide to have this treatment are over 40, but even if you are younger but perhaps have very slender hands or are naturally very slim, you might wish to improve the look of your hands. If you have a special event like a wedding, a hand rejuvenation treatment can make you feel all the more glamorous and youthful. Before a treatment can be agreed upon however, we will ask that you attend a no obligation consultation, just so that we can examine your hands and check your medical history, to ensure that a dermal filler treatment will be both effective and safe for you to undergo.
Hand rejuvenation is an injectable treatment that restores lost volume in the backs of the hands. As we age, the hands lose fat and the skin thins, so veins, tendons and knuckles become more visible and the hands can look bony. Rosie uses a hyaluronic acid dermal filler to replace some of that volume. The result is smoother, softer-looking hands that better match a refreshed face.
We use a dermal filler made from hyaluronic acid, a substance your body already produces that helps keep skin plump and hydrated. The filler is a smooth gel designed for the thin skin of the hands. It sits under the skin, cushions over the veins and tendons, and attracts water to improve hydration. Because hyaluronic acid breaks down naturally over time, the results are temporary.
Yes, when it’s carried out by a medically qualified, experienced practitioner. Rosie is an Independent Nurse Prescriber with 15 years’ experience in injectables and a Masters-level qualification in musculoskeletal medicine, so she knows the anatomy of the hand in detail. Every treatment starts with a consultation and full medical history. As with any injectable, there are risks such as bruising, swelling and, rarely, infection, and Rosie will talk you through these before you decide.
Most people find it very manageable. The filler contains a local anaesthetic to numb the area as it goes in, and we can apply numbing cream beforehand. Depending on your hands, Rosie may use a fine blunt cannula, which means fewer injection points and less bruising. Expect some pressure and a few sharp scratches. The appointment takes about an hour.
You’ll see a difference straight away, although there will be some swelling at first. The final result shows once the swelling has settled, usually after about five days. Results typically last six to twelve months. Sun exposure, smoking, and how much you use your hands all affect how long the filler lasts. Many clients book a top-up once a year.
Your hands may be swollen, tender or bruised for a few days. This usually settles within a week. Most people get on with their day straight after. For the first 24 to 48 hours, avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, very hot baths and saunas. Take your rings off before your appointment, because swelling can make them tight for a day or two.
Filler restores volume, so its biggest effect is on visible veins, tendons and bony knuckles. It also improves hydration, which makes the skin look smoother. Brown age spots are pigmentation, and filler won’t fade those. A daily SPF on the backs of your hands helps stop new ones forming. If thin, crepey skin is your main concern, a skin booster may suit you better, and Rosie can advise at consultation.
Hand rejuvenation starts from £475. The final cost depends on how much filler your hands need, and you’ll get a clear quote at your consultation before any treatment.
